Why Your World is About to Get a Whole Lot Smaller by Jeff Rubin

I think everyone who has to buy gas for a car should read this book. We can all remember the $4.00 per gallon gas prices of two years ago and we feel like it is such a relief to not have to pay those rates in this bad economy. However, according to this author, we are living in a false paradise.

According to Rubin, gas pump prices went up so dramatically because the total amount of oil available for refining is decreasing. The amount of available oil in the world is decreasing. That means that no matter how we cut back, or decrease demand (which is the reason why gas prices have been lower the last two years), the amount of oil left in the world is finite and dwindling. When we use it, there won't be any more. Rubin predicts that when demand for oil increases again, which it will since prices are lower, the price will start to creep back up. We are already seeing it as gas pump prices are nearing $3.00 per gallon.

But forget about the more immediate implications of oil scarcity in gas prices. Look at what a dwindling world oil supply means for the way we live our lives. The delicious apples you bought at the grocery store last week are affordable, even though they were grown hundreds or even thousands of miles away from here, because the price of oil was cheap enough to transport them here. What if oil was three or four hundred dollars a barrel? How could the apple grower afford to ship their produce to Florida from Washington state? They couldn't. We would have to go without apples for part of the year. We would have to rely on locally grown produce or locally manufactured products for our consumption. Think about the implications of that for the way we currently live our lives.

Rubin makes the optimistic point that a shortage of oil could be good for the United States' economy. Conceivably, we could have more jobs in this country because no one can afford to ship products from overseas. But the adjustment to that sort of economy is going to be a very painful one.

Isadora: A Sensational Life by Peter Kurth

About a year ago, the Library received a suggestion in our suggestion box about getting more books and other materials on celebrities. Since I am the person responsible for most of the materials that we add to the Library's collection, I took this suggestion to heart. I keep a list in the back of my mind as I read reviews and surf the internet. looking for interesting books, videos, and e-resources that will support our students and faculty in their research. Now, I have added celebrity bios to the list.

In a recent gift collection, I found a book on Isadora Duncan by Peter Kurth. I decided to add it to the Library because it was about a celebrity. Granted, a long dead celebrity (Isadora Duncan died in 1927), but a big celebrity of her day, none the less. And now I'm reading the book for this review.

I knew very little about Duncan before I started reading the book. Of course, I knew that she was a dancer and a little unconventional for her time, but that was about it. Turns out she was not only a famous dancer but a dancer with little if any formal training. She essentially developed what we think of today as "modern dance". She believed that dance is just an expression of the forces around us and the body's movement is just an outlet for those forces.

The book is interesting and gives a great deal of insight into Duncan's life. The chapters are grouped by phases in her life, from her early years in San Franciso, to her time in Europe, specifically Paris and London, to her later life filled with tragedy. Duncan lost two children to drowning. She was never secure financially, even with all of her fame and the fact that she had her own dance school. She was known for her "wild" lifestyle with numerous lovers and her fondness for alcohol. She was a champion of women's rights. And when she died, she was a citizen of the Soviet Union.

If you are interested in dance, or even in celebrities that were just as wild in their day as some in the present day, like any of those crazy reality TV celebs, then you will like this book. I think its main message is that even the most outrageous celebrities leave a mark on our collective conscious.

Edith Wharton vs. Jane Austen

I admit it. I am a big fan of Jane Austen. I'm not an English literature scholar or even particularly well-read. I simply enjoy her storytelling and her characters. Austen's novels of English society in the 18th century completely captivate me. I wish she had had the chance to write more.

Looking for another author similar to Austen, I decided to try Edith Wharton. About three years ago, I started working toward becoming a well-read person by reading classics in English and American literature. I took on such classics as The House of the Seven Gables (thumbs up), The Last of the Mohicans (thumbs down -- way down), and A Christmas Carol (thumbs way up.) I even compiled a list of classics I wanted to read and Edith Wharton's books quickly rose to the top of that list.

Edith Wharton wrote novels of American society at the turn of the 20th century. I did a little research on her novels and chose The House of Mirth as my first Wharton novel. (I had seen the movie, Ethan Fromme, with Liam Neeson and Patricia Arquette and thought it was a wonderfully ironic and twisted story.)

I'm reading The House of Mirth now and I'll admit I'm having trouble with it. I'm about half-way through the book and I really don't get the point. Even thinking of the characters in the context of the time they were written, I still don't understand why the book has stood the test of time. Maybe I'm not enjoying it because I can tell that the heroine, Lily Bart, is heading for a tragic end. She is making terrible choices. I'm sure some would say that the whole point of the book is that Lily Bart had very few choices about how to succeed in a world where a woman could not survive on her own. During that time, a woman needed a husband or family to support her. (Thank goodness those days are over.)

While Jane Austen's heroines, like Elizabeth Bennett and Eleanor Dashwood, are confronted with similar situations to that of Lily Bart, Austen's women try to make the best of their situations. They seem to have a more light-hearted approach to life. While Lily tries to "work the system" of society to her benefit, Elizabeth and Eleanor choose to live simply, work hard, and wait for opportunities for advancement. It may be a bit "Pollyanna" of me, but I admire a character whom life rewards for "playing by the rules".

I'll keep slogging through The House of Mirth. Then it is back to Jane Austen. Or perhaps the latest take on Austen, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Now that books sounds pretty interesting!

Straight, No Chaser by Jill Nelson

This book is an excellent account of what it means to be an African American woman in late 1990s America. The author discusses her perceptions about body image, success, love and marriage, and family that have shaped her life and career. While much of what she writes pertains only to African American women, as a white woman I found many of her ideas and insights to be familiar.

Nelson's description of the ideal female body image and how it can never be obtained by African American women was interesting. She devotes a whole chapter to the quest for perfect skin, long flowing hair, and thin thighs. According to Nelson, the black woman is often "invisible" to society because she does not look like the ideal woman depicted in movies, fairy tales, and the media. Another chapter discusses the African American woman's role in marriage and family. Nelson expresses her frustration with women being satisfied or content with polygamous relationships and unequal partnerships because they are scared of "losing their man" or being perceived as "too strong" or "not feminine enough".

I agree with Nelson in her assertion that African American women are the people who make churches, community organizations, schools and other basic community groups run smoothly. Without the women to do the everyday work, many of these types of organizations would not function. Nelson's frustration with the status quo is that these women rarely get the credit they deserve for the important work that they do.

While many of Nelson's observations apply to African American women, I think most of them also apply to women in general. I found myself nodding my head while reading much of this book and it was encouraging to me that other women are experiencing the same problems in life that I have experienced. In a nutshell, Nelson offers this advice: Be strong, be true to yourself, live your life on your own terms.

The Long Thaw by David Archer

At first glance, The Long Thaw seems to be just another book about global warming. And it is about global warming. But the context in which the concept is presented is what sets this book apart, in my opinion.

David Archer, a professor of geophysical sciences at the University of Chicago, writes in an approachable style, especially for the non-expert like myself. He expresses scientific theories in terms that I can understand. For example, Archer compares the way the earth's atmosphere absorbs infrared radiation to the way a sink drains while the faucet is still running. I know it doesn't make complete sense when I describe it, but I understood Archer's description in the book without a problem. He even included visual aids.

The book contains in-depth chapters on other climate change events in the earth's history. Archer compares those events to what is happening to our climate now. According to Archer, our climate is gradually heating up because of the effect of carbon dioxide emissions. I always thought the main culprit in global warming was carbon monoxide but not according to this book. Archer claims the effects probably won't be felt by this generation but the impact from this generation will be obvious by the year 2100. This is a much quicker "turnaround" than for previous global climate events.

Perhaps the most disturbing idea I took away form this book is that there is little that humans can do to fix this problem. Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which is produced by burning coal, does not dissipate completely, no matter what we do. A percentage of the carbon dioxide emissions from last year or even 10 years ago are still clogging the atmosphere and will continue to do so indefinitely.

Archer does not offer solutions to the problem. He just presents the facts as he understands them. And he explains them in clear, understandable terms for all. I think it is up to the reader to take that knowledge and develop their own solutions for the sake of future generations.

Civil Liberties in Opposing Viewpoints series

When charged with writing this review, I must admit I groaned inwardly. How was I going to find the time to read this book and write a review? Especially a review that anyone would want to read? Needless to say, I chose a book that was short!

Then, I started to read the book and was almost immediate fascinated by it. Civil liberties is not exactly a titillating subject (unless you consider the pornography/freedom of expression angle). However, this book presented both sides of the issues in such a balanced way that I found myself sympathizing with most aspects of the pro and con arguments.

On the issue of first amendment rights, the book presents no less than eight arguments on various aspects of free speech. From flag burning to hate speech to pornography, every argument was covered. If I had to write a paper on the first amendment, this book would be a great place to start. Other subjects in the book included separation of church and state, technology and privacy, and the War on Terror's affect on our civil liberties. At the end of each section, the editors even refer to other articles for additional reading. This would be a great way to build a list of sources for a research paper.

The library has all of the books in this series (at least those published since 2007) available for check out. Topics range from Iraq to addiction, from genetic engineering to racial profiling. Is it any coincidence that these topics are good topics for research papers? I don't think so!

Check the library's catalog for the Opposing Viewpoints series when you are struggling to find a research paper topic this fall. These books are a great place to start.
